Abstract

This study examines how Korean dramas on Netflix portray individuals living with mental health challenges by focusing on stereotypes and visual cues that may shape public perception. Through content analysis, it explores common stereotypes, the social challenges faced by lead characters with mental illness, and the development of their self-concept. The study found that stereotypes such as violent, psycho, self-obsessed, and seductive are common visual cues associated with individuals suffering from mental disorders. Lead characters frequently experience childhood trauma, societal stigma, and self-isolation, often relying on friends or a romantic partner for support. Korean dramas from 2010-2022 tend to depict mental illness as something that can be “cured“ by love, which creates both positive and negative perceptions. While this humanizes individuals with mental disorders, it also emphasizes romance over the essential role of mental health professionals, potentially fostering unrealistic expectations.
